Why are we playing games?

From a simply logical perspective, most games are a complete waste of time. We will not get any further by just playing a game of tennis or a quick match of football. All that would happen is us getting sweaty, and probably smell like cheese for the rest of the day. But then why are we still playing games?

Some are playing for money. In poker if we play for money, that makes the game interesting, it gives the game a purpose, it becomes exciting. But then why are we playing without getting paid?

After working and stressing for hours in front of a computer, or suffering through a math class in school. It is nice to let go of the tension by playing a game of any kind, because it will change our entire mood and reboot us, making us forget our problems even if just for a few minutes.

We also play to win, to feel that we are better than others at something. We are so much alike, it’s difficult to feel special, but when you are the best on the whole football pitch, or you own the entire monopoly map, doesn’t that put a smile on your face?

To conclude, we play games because we are hoping to win something out of them, a good paycheck, a good time with friends that will make us forget about our otherwise incredibly annoying life, or simply the feeling of winning, because we are so competitive.
